“Everybody’s life has love, hate and pain in it. Making music is my way of dealing with it, growing from it, and moving on.” – J. Maurice
I’ve always been a sucker for a good quote, I’ll admit it. And ever since I read this one by rapper J. Maurice I couldn’t get it out of my head, which is how I ended up listening to him. Well, it’s true, isn’t it? I like to think I’ve listened to a fair amount of music in my time and good tunes always have that one thing in common – emotion. Raw, unadulterated feeling that makes it clear to the listener that this was more than a song for the artist, it was a healing process.
And that’s also clear with J. Maurice’s latest tune, “Favors”. Though going heavy on the auto-tune, it manages to convey bucket-loads of emotion, regardless if you’ve lived through a similar situation or not. It’s a song about many things, but at its’ core, it’s a song about being used. About feeling dirty and alone, even when it seems like you have all the friends in the world“Would you still show love, knowing you don’t need nothing from me?”
It’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at times and with “Favors”, J. Maurice really hits you where it hurts (but in a good way). It’s an overall strong tune, with well-crafted lyrics and a solid beat and rhythm that gets stuck into your head, so that you find yourself humming it all through the day. And maybe, if you listen hard enough and if you’re willing to hear what Maurice is saying, maybe it helps you say ‘no’ a little more, especially to people who don’t really care about you.
Is that what he’s saying? I don’t know. Truth is, like with any good song, it’s telling you many different things and they vary from person to person, so all I can do is encourage you to listen to “Favors” and make up your own mind. Listen on H3 – Home of Hip Hop, or at www.imoutoffavors.com
